One of my favourite games of all time, from the makers of Destruction Derby. Then again who isn't aware of this series?

I know, it is one of my personal favourite driving games due to the fact it was solely created to simulate Hollywood car chases.

Well, there were also some missions that contained additional cars that were not made available in the take a ride mode. In addition to this, the PC version contained brand new vehicles not seen in the original PS1 edition.

To put simply, Driver is quite possibly my favourite game of all time. From the developers of Destruction Derby, Driver took both me and the games industry by storm by offering the first truly successful 3D, free roaming driving experience. Its success lied in its sole aim to encapsulate the thrill of 70s car chases, which it captured in a number of ways so sublimely like no other game of its time. The car selection comprised of that of 70s muscle cars, which were of course a true car chase staple of that era, with a suitably erratic yet maneuverable driving model with the best handbrake turns that any game yet has managed to offer. A particularly neat touch was the inclusion of detachable hubcaps when cornering, directly mimicking Bullitt. Even the settings were subtly tied in with car chases, with San Francisco being lifted from Bullitt, New York from The Seven-ups and Los Angeles being the car chase capital of the world. Driver also closely followed the 1970s film The Driver, and went as far as clearly emulating the infamous car park scene by using it as the introductory level and also bizarrely using the very same crash sound effect used in this scene of the film for accidents in the game.

Even today, Driver is still an absolute joy to behold, but sadly its successive iterations didn't quite retain the success and merit of their father. Driver 2 was a plodding disaster, Driv3r was met with an almighty critical backlash and Parallel Lines completely strayed away from Driver's roots altogether.

The PC version of the game also contained a large assortment of additional playable cars, improved graphics and even a speedometer which has been noticeably absent from all other Driver games in the series.

I was under the impression that the three Drivers took place in succession, with Driver taking place in the early-mid 1970s, Driver 2 happening right after and Driv3r took place in the early 1980s (based on the cars, which clearly are from the late 1970s-early 1980s).

Yes but Tanner uses a new Nokia phone, so it must be placed in 2004, like the game release date.

Driver 2 was set in the late 70s. Driv3r seems to be set in like 1992 or 1993.

AMC_Pacer_Man, you can only unlock them on PC. Go into driving games, play Survival, and enter the code "SShelley" in the High Scores. Then, Go into the cheat menu and activate "Unlock All Cars"

The superfly is the Dodge Charger.

I loved the teaser, it was a mix of the original intro (with the Mustang) and the first test you had to do in the garage (I guess the Challenger was used because of this) :

I don't want to sound like an ad-bot here, but I am being dead serious when I say that this game is currently being ripped to shreds when it comes to modding! We actually have new cars implemented into the game, and they work!

Visit drivermadness.net, and visit the "Modifying" section nested within Driver...

direct link: www.drivermadness.net/forum/v2/viewforum.php?f=72

We currently have a Pontiac TransAm, A Plymouth Duster 340, a 1973 Ford Ranchero (my own work, a modified 1973 gran torino from the game), and soon to come a Volvo 240, and 1977 Ford Ranchero.

PLEASE CHECK IT OUT. This game NEEDS attention, and once modding is fully up and running, we need to strive and beat Midtown Madness 2 (ok well that's just crazy talk, it's exciting to talk about it!)

I'm not sure who's in charge of modifying everything, but almost HALF of these cars are "Made for Game" because the textures don't belong on those type of car bodies. The same textures are used multiple times...so how is it possible that they resemble something when they're just a mashup of the same car?

As a driver modder and re-skinner let me explain something, Driver has all of the Playable cars, but all of the traffic is a set of models each city has the same models (cant rember how many but a coupe, a convertible, a sedan, taxi, van, pickup, hatchback, and luxury looking car) Each of these cars has a texture sheet, wich wraps around the same models, in diffrent maps, meaning all these cars are fictinal, but based on generic cars that were around in the 70s, but the playstation vertion only has 2 diffrent car models per level wich i guess is why there slightly diffrent, If taking the game apart is not enough proof then there is No hope, also just got new driver, verry cool if a little depressing,

Indeed the CIVCAR models (9 total) are the same used in all levels except Newcastle. These definitely were not made to look exactly like real cars. But, atleast they used one car's textures for almost the whole model. And... we have the proof that shows the cop car did existed for real!
