I think the fin was for the courses with long straights, like Le Mans, to add stability.
There was one in Finland in the 50s and 60s... Dark blue and white, Scuderia Askolin car.

The car is now British Racing Green.

D types have been known to not have the hugh fin.

There is a road-going version of the D-Type called the XKSS but tragically, a fire broke out at the Browns Lane plant destroying nine of the twenty-five cars that had already been completed or were semi-completed. Production is thought to have included 53 customer D-types, 18 factory team cars, and 16 XKSS versions.

 Something I noticed: the D-Type in Forza is listed as a 1956 model, yet in real life, the 1956 cars used a full-width windscreen. What gives?

Also, it's missing the huge fin. What varieties were there?
