This was an epic PS2 game, with a realistically detailed city of London to drive about in. Whilst the on foot sections were a little uninspired, it was still a joy to be able to drive around a well crafted city in the UK for once. Curiously, back in 2000 a few screenshots emerged but were revealed to be fake:

Sadly the Audi TT shown here was never inserted into the final game. Later on, some in game shots finally surfaced, again with cars that were never seen in the final game, including a BMW and a Jaguar:

It would have been so kool to have Jags in the game! they even had the Broadspeed racing XJ12 C in the initial gameshots, apparently Jaguar objected to being in it!?! oh well...

The Aston Vantage on the right of the Jaguar wasnt in the game either was it?

Along with Driver and GTA 3, The Getaway is one of my favourite ever games. Costing millions of pounds to produce, the game is one of the most expensive titles ever created, thanks to its high production values. At the time, it was billed as being as close to a movie a game can get, and I was inclined to agree - the cut scenes and character models were very impressive indeed, playing like a typical British film experience. However, the game gained more notoriety for its sheer ambition of creating a virtual and accurate representation of London, which had never been previously done before on such a vast scale. The detail and accuracy of the London map, amongst some astonishing graphics, was imply sublime, and I was overjoyed at the prospect of finally being able to drive around a 3D English city in the style of Grand Theft Auto (forgetting of course GTA London. The project was however delayed by several years, which did little to quench the hype and anticipation surrounding the game, until it was finally released in late 2002. It played as a mix of driving and shooting set pieces, and the main appeal of the game in addition to the sprawling London city was the inclusion of real life, licensed cars, which really added to the overall authenticity. Whilst the handling could have been less twitchy, it was still a joy to be able to drive around the city in real life cars, and even damage them. However, the on foot sections faired less well, with cumbersome controls and an inability to accurately target enemies. I also didn't like blance in difficulty, since the first characters missions were sometimes relentlessly difficult, whereas the second of the game was comparatively easy. Overall, The Getaway remains, for me, one of the most memorable PS2 titles despite its shortcomings. Whilst at times it may feel like it can't decide whether it wants to be a game or a movie, it is nonetheless a highly polished and authentic experience that wasn't to be missed. I have replaced most of the previous images as well as adding a few that were previously missing.

A sequel was spawned, with The Getaway Black Monday, but it was less well received. Whilst it did improve some aspects, such as more cars and more modes to play, it lacked the initial wow factor that the Getaway had achieved with its representation of London, since the map was reused. The Getaway was also brought to PSP with Gangs Of London and a third title is stated to be released for PS3.

What many don't realise was that The Getaway was originally destined to be a PS1 game, featuring only 10 - 20% of the area used in the final PS2 version and centred on a gang of jewel thieves. A significant portion of the game was completed, and playable code does exist, but to date, nobody has seen it. In what I think is an IGCD exclusive (I really couldn't find anything elsewhere on the Internet), I present some screenshots of the PS1 version which I scanned from an old magazine:

As mentioned in an earlier post, a number of fake screenshots initially emerged which depicted cars not present in the final game. However, this was still true when real screenshots arrived with cars such as Jaguars, Aston Martins, Fords and BMWs not making it into the final game due to the manufacturers pulling out at the last minute. Video footage even exists showing some of these cars, which shows just how late they pulled out of the game. In addition to the cars seen above, I also found this BMW:

Finally, I found another interesting discovery relating to missing cars. In the run up to the games launch, a playable demo was issued which featured a Jaguar in the first mission, which was later replaced by the Rover 75. After rummaging around, I found the 6 year old demo disc to provide these shots, and again I cannot find these elsewhere so it's another IGCD exclusive:

A Ford Fiesta was also found in the demo, which was replaced by the Peugeot 306:

In the vein of GTA 2 and Driv3r, The Getaway also received a live action promotional film. It basically outlines the plot of the game, but it was interesting yet weird at the same time to witness the real life actors who played the characters - each actor's face was scanned using a new technology at the time so every character looks alike to their game counterpart.

Once again, I could not find this anywhere else on the Internet, so I am hoping it is the first time it has been released - has anyone seen this before?

I also uploaded it to IMCDB.

Recently bought this game with a secondhand PS2 (after selling mine 4 years ago.....silly boy). Abseloutely weep and pee myself with laughter as I hijack the ambulance and then chase its driver down the street to either pistol whip him or shhot him in the back!!! What riotous psychomaniac fun!!! Hitting and shooting beat bobbies on the pavement is fun too.
'Seriously' though (???!!!) the AI traffic is a very good driving situation simulator, with other road users, traffic lights, and pedestrians crossing at random.
And the best bit? It's got SAABs in it!!! Would have been nice to include either the 900 or 900NG convertible with the top down......
A point for those who "can't find it", there are loads of sources on Amazon dot co uk, and Gamestation in the UK offers preowned ones for.....99p!!!!!! Just ask them for a neat unscratched disk example, I did!!! ;) :king:

This game was way too hard for me, probably because of the hyper-realistic driving (toned down considerably in Black Monday). I couldn't even escape from the cops after the museum heist level, which was only the second or third mission! I do remember the Jag from the demo, though, was kind of surprised to see a Rover in it's place when we got the full game.
Also i did find the Esprit once, it's next to an HSBC bank, that's all i can remember XD.
Oh yeah, if anybody else wants to get "free roam" without beating all the missions, do the first chase mission, and then instead of going into the warehouse, get out of your car (leave it there!) and walk away. You can now explore the city as much as you want. The indicators will keep trying to tell you to go back to the warehouse, though.

Secret cars and their locations are available on the 'net, but here's a list of them:
The Daimler Ferret Scout car is on a raised display dais behind the railings on the south side of Birdcage Walk.
On the north side of Horseferry Road there is an alleyway. A tight turn right at the end leads into a series of 90-degree left turns down into an underground garage. You can find the 'Ford Mustang'-style car and the modded/cruze Peugeot 306 here.

On the south side of St Thomas Street is a large yard behind brick walls. Go in through the gate and in the corner is the modded Lotus Super 7 that you start free-roam in.

Nearby down the east side of Bermondsey Street is a very tight single-car garage with a white Skyline GT-R in it.
In the middle of Chinatown opposite the pedestrian street with many Chinese shops is the entrance to the underground car park used in the Yardie/Triad war off the Charing Cross road and Shaftesbury Avenue. It has about 4 layers and you can find the Austin London taxi, a Micra, a Merc A-class, the Triad Civic coupe, and the SAAB 9-X.
At the northern extent of the scenery area on the Marylebone Road, at the northern tip with Baker street, is a lay-by next to a tube station. There is a small recess next to the HSBC bank and at the back of this is the Mk1 Lotus Esprit.
Go down the Bayswater Road from Marble Arch and turn left at the barriers onto the curved road (in reality called West Carriage Drive). In the wall opposite is an opening, go through and drive along until you come to a mansion house. On the gravel drive is a Skyline GT-R and a TVR. To the right is a garage containing the go-kart and Lotus M250 (Evora??).
The Royal Parks landscaping pickup is in the middle of Hyde Park down the entrance from Marble Arch.

In GTA Vice City on the Mission Autocide, you kill Hammond, Carter and Charlie...Of Course they were with different names like Marcus Hammond, Franco Carter and Charlie Dylson...

It's like Rockstar were saying: "don't mess with me"

But Getaway Black Monday went throught a different gameplay...

As the Tanner of the Driver Series (Driver 2) went just to get GTA...In the mission Autocide you kill Dick Tanner, And in the posterior Driv3r you kill a lot of Timmy Vercettis...

It's a War...hahuhuauhahuHuaHUhuahuahuahu

About this game, I had one on the past and now I bought one again, It's incredible, the details, the story, I remember that it was very difficult go throught any mission, but know, after doing Black Monday, GTAIV and Bourne Conspiracy, I felt no difficulty at all...

Also, if anybody has an original EU V1 copy of the game, with the BT Van, kindly make an ISO and upload it-RacingFreak and I require it for research purposes.

There are references to a Chrysler Voyager and an Escort XR3i as well, but on PAL V3 and NTSC, they make the game go into an inf. loading screen. Hopefully they're still there in the PAL V1 files.

It has a lot refferences, but until I dont look at the original EU release or OPM Demo #1 I can't confirm anything.

The Ford Fiesta exists in OPM Demo #2, I managed to get it in free roam mode aswell, will do video about it soon.

Sadly, nothing about the Granny estate, Audi TT, or Ford Capri in NTSC or PAL V3.
Strangely enough, the 306 copcar uses the CFIESTA basename.

I need to try out this game soon, the only bad thing about it as I see from the screenshots is that the game is set in UK but there are no Cossies or other perfomance Fords :p

You mean the Bimmer 3 Series. The Aston also suffers from the same prob.
I found some code referencing the Granada, TT, and Capri, also a Subaru of some sort, a Mitsu VR4, and a civi Fiesta.

Trully amazing, it's sad, I want all these cars in the stock game...

Also, the Skoda Fabia is in fact, a Felicia ;)

I still have the V1 Euro edition so I'll see what I can do.

Also found references in old articles to a Ford Capri which confirms it existed along with a Ford Focus, Chrysler Voyager and SEAT Ibiza!

That's right, I also managed to play as Yardie member, but it's more happening at random principle. More to come ;)

Currently listing up all cars existing or being mentioned in game files, which work and which do not (in different game versions some do, while other do not).

For those wondering why there's no shadows underneath the vehicles when they're being driven, it's a PCSX2 bug. Happens in both DX9 and DX10 HW.

It's not possible driving these on actual PS2 yet as im using emulator. However it's possible for The Getaway: Black Monday because the hacked cars can be stored into garages.

Eh sure, however im running it in PCSX2 just fine, at 60fps and the NTSC version does not have bugged skybox as the PAL does.
