The name sounds like a combination of Lada and the Trabant 601.

Trabant means satelite in german. Laika was the first dog send into space, so name of this vehicle is a reference to this event and meaning of original name of this car.

Laika was first dog (and in fact living organism) that entered orbit in 1957. Since it was send there by Soviets, this is the kind of name that was given on a lot of eastern bloc products (mainly Soviet produced though).
